Singleness can become a distraction for many Christians, says Ordained Foursquare Minister Tammy Sevcov. “Single people often believe that they are only half a person, waiting for Mr. or Ms. Right to complete them,” she notes.
Tammy believes the church needs to grow up and recognize that single Christians have an individual call of God on their lives. In this video from Connection 2013, she speaks from personal experience as a single person about the misguided notion that single people must first be married before they can experience ministry leadership.
Nearly half of all Americans are single, Tammy notes, and she says they need to know that God has a plan for their lives as single people. In this bold, brief and power-packed session, she encourages both single and married leaders to embrace a life totally surrendered to Christ.
This teaching will have obvious appeal to singles, but it may be especially important for married couples and leaders in the church who need to challenge conventional wisdom about how single people are treated in our churches.
Tammy references Galatians 2:20 and says every person—single or married—must recognize that he or she has been crucified with Christ. She wants leaders to consider how they minister to single people, and how they influence single Christians. Is it all about finding a mate, or is it all about finding the heart of God?
We all need to learn to live a crucified life, Tammy concludes: “Whether married or single, be focused on what you are called to do for Him.”
