Among the many issues discussed in the ecumenical life of the body of Christ, one of the most debated, and sadly divisive, is the place of women in ministry leadership.
While many in our Foursquare family enjoy the freedom of releasing anyone called by God into fruitful leadership, we recognize that some men and women are still diligently studying the Scriptures to either find resolution in this matter or strengthen their convictions in the face of criticism.
Ultimately, for all our social and ideological grounds, the deciding and essential factor that must determine our position on church leadership is the Scriptures. And, if we’re honest, the English translations of the Scriptures, read at a cultural distance of at least 2,000 years, have a challenging appearance.
A few years ago, we posted three videos on Foursquare’s Vimeo channel, and want to highlight them as a clear, deep and helpful resource if you are looking to dig deeper into passages such as 1 Timothy 2.
The videos feature over five hours of teaching, mostly recorded live by Jerry Dirmann, senior pastor of The Rock (Anaheim Foursquare Church) in Anaheim, Calif., and featuring guest commentary from a group of scholars. Along with Pastor Jerry’s strong, biblical teaching, contextual insight and cultural clarity are brought by Steve Schell, Jim W. Adams and Clayton Robinson.
We wholeheartedly believe that Jesus wants every member of His body, regardless of age, gender and ethnicity, empowered and released into the ministry to which He is calling them.
The sessions begin with a broad overview of the biblical evidence for women in leadership, followed by an up-close study of the apostle Paul’s prohibitions, before concluding with a view of the backdrop of prophetic anointing that accompanies God’s call to all people.
Our commitment is to the Lord Jesus and His Word. We wholeheartedly believe that Jesus wants every member of His body, regardless of age, gender and ethnicity, empowered and released into the ministry to which He is calling them.
We commend these videos to you and your team, that you might joyfully and freely participate in the freedom of ministry leadership for both women and men.
