Child and Youth Protection Training Series

By The Foursquare Church

The Foursquare Church created this training series to prevent the maltreatment of children and youth so they can mature in personal faith in Christ without the wounds of abuse in their lives. Watch the four-part series here and download additional study materials.

Developed by The Foursquare Church to accompany the Child and Youth Protection Manual.

"...may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."    -- 1 Thessalonians 5:23

God intends for our children and youth to meet and accept Jesus Christ early in life and to realize their full potential in the Holy Spirit without the wounds of abuse to slow down their spiritual growth and development. These video sessions focus on biblical principles applying how to help children and youth mature with little or no impact from abuse or maltreatment.

El Manual de Protección de Jóvenes y Niños y las series de capacitación también están disponibles en español.

Opportunities for Personal Ministry

As you prepare to offer this training to adult staff and volunteers, it may be helpful to be reminded of the following opportunities for personal ministry.

  • Be aware that the subject of child abuse is a sensitive subject for many people, even people in the church.

  • Plan to minister to overt reactions from people before, during and even after you offer this training series. People may be resistant, resentful or offended because you are even discussing such a topic in the church. Discuss this possibility with your church leadership and determine beforehand how you will handle such reaction with the love of Christ and God's grace.

  • Some people in your training sessions may welcome the training and be supportive of its implementation in the church but still react strongly to certain aspects of the discussion. In some cases, this reaction may be due to the affects of abuse either on the person him or herself or on someone he or she knows and cares about.

  • As people react to the subject of child abuse, Christ-like sensitivity is called for and you may want to involve other ministry leaders (your senior pastor, for instance) in further discussion and possible follow up ministry with the person who expresses such a reaction.

Optional Discussion Groups / Case Studies

In addition to personal ministry opportunities that might arise from this training series, you may find it advisable to add the following discussion groups/case studies to one of the training sessions. The discussion might help bring specific application of one or more of the training outcomes for people in your ministry.

Activity Option A - What would you do?
Break into small groups and spend 3-4 minutes discussing responses to one of these case studies (copy one of the case studies for each group):

  • You attend your child's soccer games regularly and know most every one of the parents and coaches, the kids on team and their siblings. At one particular game, you notice that one of the dads is spending quite a bit of time with a little girl he is not related to. The girl's parents are not around and no one else seems to notice that the man and little girl are walking toward the man's car. How should you respond?
  • One of the helpers in your church's children's ministry has been going through some difficult circumstances lately. You are teaching in a nearby classroom and can hear this helper lose her temper with a group of kids outside. As you listen more carefully, you can tell she is especially verbally angry at one particular boy, yelling and berating him for his misbehavior. The helper in your class also noticed the incident and looks to you for guidance about what to do. How should you respond?

Activity Option B - What does the Bible say? One of the key Bible verses for this training series is 1 Thessalonians 5:23, "May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ." Spend a few minutes reflecting on the meaning of this verse and ask for specific points of application from the verse as they relate to this training series.
