Foursquare Easter Services Result in Thousands Saved

Whether by traditional means of communication and outreach—such as flyers, newspaper ads, word-of-mouth and special Easter services—or via more avant-garde methods—using Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and hosting creative community events—Foursquare churches across the U.S. reached an unprecedented number of people on the holiday weekend as a result.

Tabulated together, the 70 Foursquare churches that responded to a post-Easter survey sent to all senior pastors via email reported an 80 percent increase in attendance compared to typical Sunday numbers, from 38,844 on a usual Sunday to 69,937 on Easter.

Most important, a total of 2,913 people made first-time decisions for Christ during holiday services and outreaches conducted by the 70 churches in the survey. Additionally, 1,565 people rededicated their lives to Christ, 286 were baptized in water, and 44 were baptized with the Holy Spirit.

Senior Pastor Tim Poetzl from Stanwood Foursquare Church in Stanwood, Wash., reports 1,117 people participating in Easter services. That’s 19 percent of their town, he notes, and 3 percent of the surrounding community.

At New Life Christian Fellowship (Moreno Valley Foursquare Church) in Moreno Valley, Calif., Senior Pastor James Samples shares that they served a free breakfast on Easter to everyone, including neighbors, feeding around 200 people. In addition, more than 200 people attended dramatic musical performances and a skit by the church’s kids.

“This year we had the largest impact to families that were not a part of our church than any time prior,” James tells Foursquare.org. “That weekend, including Easter Sunday, we touched around 200 people that were not a part of our congregation.”

Many congregations worked with other churches in their areas to maximize their Easter outreaches. Senior Pastor Kenny Lee from Living Fortress (Cody Foursquare Church) in Cody, Wyo., says that for the past five years, his church has enjoyed a combined worship service on Easter with two or more other congregations. He points out that working together does something important in the community.

“This year we had an adaptation of 1 Cor. 15 read by over 12 people, and several people shared testimonies and words from the Lord,” Kenny explains. “We shared communion and worshiped together. This has become an outreach event in our community … we break down denominational walls in this special combined service.”

Abundant Life (Mooresville South Foursquare Church) in Mooresville, N.C., organized a flash mob that told the story of Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection, and led a group of almost 700 gathered in singing “Jesus Loves Me.” They also sponsored—for the sixth year in a row—a community Easter egg hunt. Hosting the event at an elementary school, they filled over 10,000 eggs with candy and prizes.

“Not only do we get to love our community, we also learn the value of serving as a church family,” Abundant Life’s Senior Pastor Bob Bankhead affirms. “From our preschoolers to the grandparents, we all get to help and be a part of this special ministry opportunity to our community. We are already planning for Easter 2013 and expecting an even greater response.”

Senior Pastor Clayton Robinson and his congregation, The Connection (Lake Forest Foursquare Church) in Lake Forest, Calif., made a generous gesture on Easter Sunday to help disenfranchised people in their community. For each person who attended Easter services, the church paid for a meal for a homeless person. When a check representing the total amount of meals was held up, everyone cheered—without being asked for anything, guests were helping the homeless simply by attending Easter Sunday.

For several weeks leading up to Easter, The Connection held free art classes for children in the community and also set up a table in the city’s main shopping mall to offer prayer for anyone who wanted it, which Clayton says opened up many opportunities for dialog and ministry.

On Easter Sunday, to reach the area’s children and families, the church hosted a free breakfast, an Easter egg roll, pony rides, a petting zoo and a bounce house, and served snow cones.

“To our amazement, so many people came to Christ and have now declared The Connection as their church that we no longer can fit into our worship center,” Clayton shares. “We are scrambling to catch up to what God is doing in Lake Forest!”

The Washington Post ran a cover photo that featured Capital Church's annual Lincoln Memorial sunrise Easter service. The Post reports that the Foursquare church based in Vienna, Va., that usually hosts 300 people "swells to several thousand during the outdoor Easter service."

Angelus Temple Hispanic Foursquare Church in the heart of Los Angeles is also working to keep up with how fast the Holy Spirit is working following their Easter outreach. Senior Pastor Raymundo Diaz says that it was amazing to see entire families coming to Christ all at the same time.

More than 2,000 people attended the congregation’s outreach in nearby Lincoln Park, Raymundo reports, and 617 made first-time decisions for Christ. The following Sunday, a church plant was established in the area of the outreach to help disciple new believers, and 70 people attended the first service.

“The hearts of the people were so hungry to hear the gospel,” Raymundo recalls. “Truly, the harvest is ready.”

And he reminds us all of what it takes to reap that harvest.

“We, the church,” he asserts, “must go outside our walls to reach them.”

And he reminds us all of what it takes to reap that harvest.

“We, the church,” he asserts, “must go outside our walls to reach them.”

The Foursquare Missions Committee presented a grand challenge at Connection 2011—a call to raise $1 million by the end of June 2012 to impact lives for Christ. Significant offerings and commitments were made, and God is working worldwide through those willing to go, lead and send.

The total amount received as of March 31, 2012, is just over $423,000. With all pledged monies due by the end of June, less than half the money pledged has been received with just three months left in the $1 million challenge. Foursquare churches that have not fulfilled their pledges to date are encouraged to continue to give toward their commitments.

FMI has already put the more than $400,000 received to work around the world. Last December, phase one allocations were announced; now it’s time to celebrate with a short report on projects funded through giving thus far.

The following chart highlights 16 specific projects. Each project represents a unique effort to live out the Foursquare Four-Stage Development Model and Foursquare President Glenn C. Burris Jr.'s five-target vision.

In partnership with Foursquare Japan and Family Forum Japan, radio is being utilized to minister to the people. Counseling and training for workers and survivors is being offered. At least four church planting centers will hopefully be developed in areas affected by the March 2011 Tsunami.

 Ethnic Leadership Development (North Asia)

Focus: Strategic development of leadership within communities for the purpose of creating a self-contained church multiplication movement, with the hope of creating interdependence between indigenous workers, minority people groups and the global Foursquare church.

Workers are looking to move from stage 1 to stage 2 out of two major metro areas through the leadership of five to six local leaders in the process of being identified. These leaders will form the core in-country team, recognized and respected by local believers.

Focus: Looking to open Tonga to reach out beyond its current location. Workers will hold one pastoral training seminar.

The annual gathering of The Foursquare Church is coming to Phoenix from May 28–31. Foursquare Connection 2012—under the theme “Speak—Reclaim Our Voice”—is a great opportunity to connect with the Foursquare family. Special guests include renowned worship leader Matt Redman, author Margaret Feinberg and church researcher Ed Stetzer, to name just a few.

Here are some ideas that will help you get to Connection 2012—and make the most of it once you’re there. We look forward to seeing you in Phoenix!

Four Ways to Get to Connection on a Budget:

Register Early: Save $30 by registering before May 3.

Go With a Group: Save $50 per person with the group rate (for groups of seven or more from the same church).

Get a Roommate: Save on hotel rates by sharing your room with a fellow leader. Perhaps that new friend you met at your district retreat?

Use Public Transit: A one-way train ride from the airport costs only $1.75. That means no taxi, no tip, no rental car, no gas and no parking. That’s cash in your pocket.

Four Things Not to Miss in Phoenix:

Botanical Garden and Zoo: The Desert Botanical Garden and Phoenix Zoo are right next to each other, and accessible by bus and light rail. Giraffes, desert flowers and Komodo dragons—there’s something for everyone, and you’ll get a real taste of the American Southwest.

Castles ‘N’ Coasters: Roller-coasters, go-karts, miniature golf and more. This theme park is a 20-minute drive from the convention center, accessible by bus, and next to one of Arizona’s largest malls.

Grand Canyon: Phoenix is about four hours from the Grand Canyon. It’s a long haul, but consider planning a tour if you can spare the time before or after convention. It’s one of God’s great wonders and something everyone should have a chance to see for themselves.

Local Parks: For a closer taste of nature, consider the Sonoran Desert National Monument, the most biologically diverse North American desert. Or check out Camelback Mountain, which has two summit trails for experienced hikers wanting to get the top as well as some easier trails that still have great views. Don’t forget to bring water!

Four Ways to Get From the Airport to the Hotel:

Public Transportation: Phoenix’s new Metro Light Rail is a great option and only takes about 13 minutes.

Taxi: Check out the lime-green Toyota Prius Hybrids of Discount Cab. They’ve got the best-rated service and cost about $20 each way.

Shuttle: Cheaper than a taxi, you can share a shuttle. Look for the “Van Service” signs at the airport.

Rental: You can always get your own rental car at the airport. Some of our event hotels also offer discounted rates on parking.

	Four Ways to Register:

Online: Visit foursquareconnection.org to register today. Quick and easy!

Fax: Print the registration form and fax it back to us at 801.355.0250. We’ll get it right away!

Mail: You can also print the registration form and then mail it back to us. Classic!

Phone: Give us a call at 877.423.4633, and we can sign you up right over the phone. Personal service!

	Four Hotel Suggestions:

Our official host hotels currently have a waiting list. If you are unable to book reservations directly with the hotel, take a moment to add yourself to our waiting list online form. You can also go to VisitPhoenix.com to get additional tips on where to stay in downtown Phoenix.

Hyatt Regency Phoenix: The host hotel for Connection, it’s located directly across the street from the convention center. If you use the Foursquare Connection rate, you get free in-room Wi-Fi, and access to the outdoor pool and fitness center.

Renaissance Phoenix Downtown: This hotel is just one block from the convention center. It was recently remodeled, and offers free Wi-Fi as well as access to the pool and fitness center.

Sheraton Phoenix Downtown: Just two blocks from the convention center, this hotel offers a free pool and fitness center access. There’s free WiFi in the lobby, or you can pay to have it in your room.

Find Your Own: Strike out on your own and find a hotel that works for you. The Greater Phoenix Convention & Visitor’s Bureau is a great place to start.

	Four Special Connection Features:

Kids: Bring your kids to Connection 2012! Far from babysitting, we have engaging programs designed for kids and teens. We’re also welcoming toddlers (ages 15 months to 2 years) for the first time.

Young Leaders: Highly respected Foursquare ministers will share their hearts and pour into emerging leaders ages 18-35 during special evening sessions. A question-and-answer period will follow, making for a powerful mentoring opportunity.

Connection Center: Say goodbye to a traditional exhibit hall. The new space will feature great food, ample seating, live music, a resource marketplace and even a ping-pong table. The Connection Center will be open daily, including late-night hours after the evening session for those who want to eat, chat and hear some live music.

Exhibitor Passport Raffles: After a game of ping-pong in the Connection Center, visit the exhibitors to get your passport stamped. If you get 16 stamps from participating exhibitors, you can enter to win prizes, including free registration for next year’s Connection, a 2012 Experience Kit and more.

Visit the Connection 2012 website to register or learn even more reasons why you don’t want to miss Phoenix.

Life Pacific College Receives National Award

Life Pacific College (LPC, also called LIFE Bible College) in San Dimas, Calif., was honored with a top national award in February when the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) recognized the institution for outstanding enrollment growth during the 2010-2011 school year.

The Foursquare Bible college received the 2012 Jonathan N. Thigpen Enrollment Growth Award after posting a 54 percent increase during the academic year. Its exceptional rate of growth was the highest among the award’s other co-winners: Ohio Christian University, Columbia Bible College and Carolina Christian College.

“This was such a kind and affirming award to receive,” says LPC President Robert Flores, D.Min. “I am humbled and honored to be recognized this way.”

The award was announced on Feb. 24 in Orlando, Fla., during the annual conference of the ABHE, a North American agency that comprises some 200 post-secondary institutions specializing in biblical ministry formation and professional leadership education.

“We were surprised by the news and grateful to be recognized,” says Angie Richey, M.Ed., director of College Relations. “It represented a lot of hard work.”

It marked the first time LPC has been named a recipient of the award, which is given annually to one institution in each of four enrollment “quadrants.” LPC was in the 200-399 full-time enrollment quadrant, but as a result of the college’s vibrant growth, enrollment now stands at 598 students. It is an encouraging visible sign of LPC’s success with the new programs, partnerships and creative educational models it is developing.

One important growth metric is the result of the college’s new Master of Arts in Strategic Leadership, or MASL, program. Launched in January 2011, it is helping Foursquare leaders who are already in ministry to become more effective in their roles.

“The [MASL] program has been a longtime dream for LPC,” explains Frank Markow, Ph.D., director of Adult and Graduate Studies. “[It] has opened new opportunities amongst Foursquare leaders, namely those with a B.A. who have risen in leadership and now need ongoing education to help them serve with greater skill and confidence.”

In the year since its inception, the MASL has produced three “cohorts”—groups of 12 or more students who start and complete the two-year program together—and accounts for about 30 percent of the new enrollment growth.

The college is also seeing significant interest in its online Degree Completion Program, or DCP. Its bachelor of arts in Ministry and Leadership targets working leaders, such as pastors who have some prior college education but did not finish a degree.

“We have offered this program since 2005 and have graduated around 100 students who would not otherwise have been able to attend the college,” explains Brian Tomhave, M.A., associate dean of Non-Traditional Studies.

Another factor in enrollment growth is Foursquare’s Ignite Academy, a Life extension campus in Christiansburg, Va. It is spurring a significant enrollment increase and accounts for about half of the new growth. Under the leadership of director Mike Larkin, Ph.D., Ignite is opening new doors to ministry and education for Foursquare on the East Coast.

Also vital to LPC’s current growth as it plans for the future is the Internet. The school’s online, or Distance Learning, option offers “courses for credit and noncredit that students can complete from anywhere in the world,” Angie tells Foursquare.org.

“We see that trend climbing as people take advantage of the online, flexible options,” she continues. “Our online and distance learning courses keep leaders of all ages in their cities, in their ministries and on the front lines of where they live.”

Students enrolled in LPC’s Distance Learning program include those in the MASL and DCP programs, Ignite and Independent Study courses. Altogether, these students account for some 25 percent of LPC’s current full-time enrollment. By July 1, all of LPC’s Independent Study courses will be online.

The college has long-term goals for reinventing itself by the end of this decade. These include developing programs for Hispanic leaders and dual majors for bi-vocational pastors.

“We recognize that the way ministry will be done in 2020 and beyond is not likely to be the same as the way it was 10 or 20 years ago,” explains Academic Dean Michael Salmeier, Ph.D. “We want to equip our students … in ways that are relevant and applicable.”

The Thigpen Award is compelling evidence that LPC’s numerous efforts to expand its horizons are working.

“While we are encouraged by [the award], there is still much work to be done,” Angie says. “It will take a strategic, determined and fiscally responsible team to keep moving forward in light of the complexities we face every day.”

For Dr. Flores, the award reflects the success of LPC’s strategic internal partnerships. “We could not have done it,” he says, “without our Ignite family, the MASL program, our adult learners and the students in our Degree Completion Program.”

Leaders Invited to Training That Prepares Them for Crisis Situations

What do you do when tragedy strikes your congregation, your neighborhood, or perhaps your entire community? No one likes to think about it, but the world can be a dangerous place.

The Centers for Diseace Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates nearly 150,000 people between the ages of 10 and 24 are treated in emergency departments for self-inflicted injuries each year; 4,400 of these commit suicide. Further, the FBI reports that well over 1 million people in the U.S. were victims of violent crimes in 2010. That’s a lot of people in need of spiritual guidance and healing.

Foursquare pastors often are called on to minister to people facing devastating circumstances, ranging from those touching a few people, such as the unexpected and sudden death of a loved one, to those affecting large populations, such as natural disasters. But how equipped are church leaders for handling these situations?

Preparation of Foursquare ministers for ministry during such times is now an ongoing part of what Foursquare Chaplains International calls Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) training.

In January, 81 pastors and local church leaders joined Foursquare disaster relief chaplains and workers at Life Pacific College (also known as LIFE Bible College) in San Dimas, Calif., for a two-day intensive focused on equipping leaders to respond to individuals facing crisis situations.

Pastors, chaplains and lay ministers who participate in the CISM training gain a better understanding of the human soul when in crisis, according to Foursquare Chaplain Jay Donnelly. Jay is a disaster relief chaplain endorser who also serves as national coordinator of fire chaplains, chaplain representative to the Central Pacific District, and senior pastor of New Life Christian Center (Jackson Foursquare Church) in Sutter Creek, Calif.

Jay says the CISM training “provides insight on which intervention method is most appropriate for the situation, and establishes ways to stabilize a situation so that more effective ministry can take place.”

CISM training is an extension of the Disaster Relief Training (DRT) events held throughout the U.S. in 2011, and continuing into 2012. Foursquare Chaplains International Director Robby Booth says that the goal to equip some 800 Foursquare pastors and leaders to be FEMA-approved first responders became a reality last year through the DRT events.

The DRT prepared Foursquare Pastor Huey Hudson of Restoration (Huntsville Foursquare Church) in Madison, Ala., to lead his congregation in disaster response in April 2011. They were prepared to effectively minister in their community after 35 tornadoes ravaged the state and severely damaged or destroyed at least 300 homes within a 10-mile radius of the church.

Now the training is expanding to CISM events so Foursquare ministers will be ready to reach out to individuals facing natural disasters and other life-changing circumstances. Foursquare Chaplains International will also sponsor classes on group crisis intervention this year.

Jay believes this type of focused training has been stirring in the heart of the Foursquare movement for some time.

“Now we can offer specific training that lets people know what to do when disaster strikes,” he affirms.

More information about Foursquare Chaplains International and specific disaster relief training events, including registration forms, is available online.

Connection 2012: A Time to Reclaim Our Multicultural Voice

As part of this year’s annual convention, Foursquare leaders who speak Spanish will experience not just dynamic worship and Spirit-led ministry in the Word of God, but also the opportunity to interact during the business sessions.

For the first time in the history of Foursquare conventions, an English/Spanish translator will be available on microphone during the business sessions. Spanish-speaking leaders in attendance will now hear in Spanish what is being said, and have a chance to comment and ask questions during the meeting.

It’s part of helping Foursquare leaders to develop more effective ministry skills for the expanding multicultural, global-church reality that is right here in the U.S. It also reflects the heart of both Connection 2012 and Foursquare’s theme this year, which is “Speak—Reclaim Our Voice.”

“I am excited to see how God in recent years has raised the voice of the Hispanic church in the Foursquare family,” says Concilio Hispano (Hispanic Council) Chairman Daniel Prieto. Daniel maintains that it is time for Hispanic ministers and leaders to be heard as never before, and he believes the events of Foursquare Connection 2012 will provide that opportunity.

Connection 2012, to be held in Phoenix May 28–31, is for leaders from all areas of ministry representing multiple language groups—all worshiping the Lord and growing together to powerfully “reclaim our voice.” Other sessions are as follows.

	Conexion Hispana

The Conexion Hispana (Hispanic Connection) general session on Wednesday morning will feature worship led by Frank Giraldo, lead pastor of Iglesia Agua Viva (Santa Barbara Hispanic Foursquare Church) in Santa Barbara, Calif. He has ministered extensively throughout the U.S. and Latin America with Hosanna Integrity, Maranatha! Music and Canzion Productions.

Foursquare Mexico President José Manual Sanchez, senior pastor of Centro Cristiano International (International Christian Center) in Mexico, and Foursquare Pastor Frank Nuno, senior pastor of Dayspring Christian Fellowship (Panorama City Foursquare Church) in Panorama City, Calif., will speak during Conexion Hispana.

	General Sessions

In addition to the language-specific Conexion Hispana on Wednesday, all general sessions during Foursquare Connection 2012 will be translated for Spanish-speaking leaders. Headsets can be reserved as part of the registration process for Connection this year.

Because about 14 percent of our family of U.S.-based Foursquare churches are primarily Spanish-speaking, attendees will be sure to see fellow Spanish-speakers throughout convention, as well as during the general sessions, leading ministry.

Los Angeles worship leader and songwriter Eric Diaz will lead worship at each morning session. Eric currently serves as the Spanish-language worship pastor at The Rock (Anaheim Foursquare Church) in Anaheim, Calif., and has led worship alongside artists Hillsong United, Marcos Barrientos, Freddie Rodriguez and others. Main speakers will include Obed Orozco, a licensed Foursquare minister and the senior pastor of Grace to the Nations (Tuscon Grace Chapel Foursquare Church), a bilingual, multicultural and multigenerational church in Tucson, Ariz.

Full Conexion Hispana and Foursquare Connection 2012 details are available online.

Foursquare Connection 2012 will bring together pastors and their ministry teams in ways never experienced before as we “Reclaim Our Voice” in Phoenix from May 28–31, 2012.

Internationally renowned worship leader and songwriter Matt Redman will lead corporate worship during the evening general sessions. Eric Diaz—worship leader with the Hispanic congregation at The Rock (Anaheim Foursquare Church) in Anaheim, Calif., and previously the worship leader at Angelus Temple Hispanic Foursquare Church in Los Angeles—will lead worship during the morning sessions.

Of specific interest to pastors and worship leaders this year will be focused time during the morning Connection Tracks with Matt and Eric, along with a collaborative group of Foursquare worship leaders. Matt and Eric will be leading a Connection Track focused on worship and songwriting. One of their primary goals is to connect worship leaders from every level of experience, and encourage an ongoing network of Foursquare worship leaders following the gathering in Phoenix.

“Our Foursquare family has something that worship leaders can benefit from,” Eric affirms. Simply put, it’s spending time with one another. He says senior pastors look forward to connecting with other senior pastors, and this is often what draws them to Connection each year. He believes worship leaders also appreciate the opportunity to build relationships with veteran leaders in their field. This year’s Connection Track on worship will encourage those relationships to begin, and to become stronger.

Songwriters who pre-register for the worship Connection Track may submit songs prior to Foursquare Connection 2012 for a possible opportunity to share their original work during the session. The track will also include a panel of worship leaders who will answer questions and engage discussion about other ways Foursquare leaders can network and support one another.

Among the Foursquare worship leaders who are planning this year’s Connection Track is David Dirmann, senior associate pastor at The Rock in Anaheim. David has always had a passion for raising up young worship leaders, and spent a number of years teaching music at Life Pacific College.

David hopes the connection made between worship leaders in Phoenix will have long-lasting benefits for them and for the churches they serve. He would love to see worship leaders sharing original music and building lifelong, healthy relationships through which they may continually learn from one another.

Connection organizers say this year’s worship track is just one more way to keep the “connection” in Foursquare Connection 2012.

Unifying the Generations at Foursquare Connection 2012

Foursquare Connection 2012 will bring multiple generations together, as ministers and leaders of all ages interact and grow with one another in Phoenix. This year’s theme, “Speak—Reclaim Our Voice,” will have a special emphasis on engaging people from every generation.

	Engaging the Generations

The heart of the Foursquare family has always included equipping and releasing emerging leaders into effective ministry. However, historically our annual connection has been viewed as an event primarily for senior pastors. Younger leaders have sometimes struggled to find their place.

Tammy Sevcov, newly appointed connection manager, can personally identify with that feeling; she and the connection team are working hard to make sure this year’s event is different.

“It’s our passion to see that, regardless of age or role, every minister is refreshed, reinvigorated in their calling and equipped with keys that are specific to their journey,” she says.

President Glenn Burris Jr. recently wrote the Foursquare family and strongly encouraged all senior pastors to take their ministry teams with them to Phoenix this year. Further, he challenged every minister to consider sponsoring young leaders, and to share airline miles or help financially with travel expenses so they can experience Foursquare Connection 2012 together.

	Reclaiming the Generations

During this year’s convention, Barna Group President David Kinnaman, author of You Lost Me, will challenge our thinking about how the church has lost a generation and what it will take to turn things around. But this year, there will be more than mere teaching on the subject—the next generation will be fully engaged in the discussion.

Foursquare leaders such as Randy Remington and Wayne Cordeiro will spend focused time with young leaders, interacting and reflecting on their respective journeys of ministry leadership. General session worship leader Matt Redman will engage local church worship leaders with training and networking during a four-hour Connection Track.

Children and youth who attend Foursquare Connection 2012 will experience an all-new approach to NextGen ministry this year. This year’s NextGen Connection Coordinator is Stevie Mitchell, the family pastor at Anthem, Ariz., Foursquare Church. Stevie says this year will be a camp experience for children and youth. Each young person will enjoy age-appropriate worship and teaching, and will be encouraged to fulfill their individual calling.

	New Territory for the Generations

Foursquare Connection 2012 speakers and presenters will appeal to ministry staff as well as senior pastors, event planners tell Foursquare.org. In fact, Foursquare ministers of every age and ministry position will find plenty of opportunities this year to expand their ministry “tool belts” and personal competencies with restructured, all-new Connection Tracks.

Leaders will find the latest in ministry resources in the Connection Center. They will also fellowship with other leaders in the Connection Center, where they can play ping pong and Foosball, enjoy personal networking, or simply relax over coffee to the sounds of live acoustic music.

Global topics will be addressed this year during general sessions and Connection Tracks, with the hope of expanding our understanding of international needs, immigration issues and multicultural ministry. Leaders will also get a firsthand update on the Foursquare Global Summit that officially launches in Phoenix following Foursquare Connection 2012.

Foursquare Connection 2012 promises varied opportunities to enlarge the boundaries of our ministries—and our thinking—as the generations are united, global ministry is more fully engaged, and emerging leaders are more completely welcomed into the spiritual fiber of The Foursquare Church.

The psalmist David aptly expressed the concept of a multigenerational gathering: “Generation after generation stands in awe of your work; each one tells stories of your mighty acts” (Psalm 145:4, The Message).

This past year has been a year of surprises. A year of change. A year where we reunited with our past, while looking ahead to the future. A year where we helped people next door and around the world. Some people were in desperate need; others didn’t even know they were missing something.

Take a moment to reflect on how you, as a member of the Foursquare family, were a part of something bigger than yourself—a part of making a difference for the kingdom. Take a moment to learn, to grow, to mentor. And perhaps another moment to think how we can continue to work together to let the world know that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.

After coming to Christ in 2003 through the influence of a friend in what he calls the “hardcore” community, Pastor Tommy Green, an assisting minister at Salt Lake City Foursquare Church in Utah, knows the importance of reaching out to young adults overlooked by traditional churches.

She endured horrific abuse.

	Tommy Green
After coming to Christ in 2003 through the influence of a friend in what he calls the “hardcore” community, Pastor Tommy Green, an assisting minister at Salt Lake City Foursquare Church in Utah, knows the importance of reaching out to young adults overlooked by traditional churches.

	Rosalinda P. Vint
Growing up, Rosalinda P. Vint was a ward of the court in the Los Angeles County foster care system. Her broad smile, now radiant, wasn’t perceptible back then, if it existed at all. She endured horrific abuse. Now she’s an assisting minister at LightHouse Church in Newbury Park, Calif., and has dedicated her life to helping troubled youth who desperately need hope and healing.

Serafin and Alva Contreras: Simply Shifting Gears

For 42 years, Serafin and Alva Contreras have passionately served Jesus Christ in Latin America as pastors, missionaries and area missionaries for Foursquare Missions International (FMI). That’s all going to change in January 2012, when Serafin and Alva retire and hand off their current leadership role to FMI Associate Director Jonathan Hall.

But retirement for this dynamic couple isn’t about rocking chairs and sleepy schedules.

Serafin and Alva plan to continue their online ministry, which they say reached 40 million people in 2011 alone. They have a strong following on Facebook, and thousands of people are coming to Christ through their radio and TV ministry, videos and Bible studies.

When some people think of retirement, they visualize quiet days at home with the occasional visit from friends or family. Not so for Alva and Serafin. They plan to open their home regularly to ministry couples needing spiritual counseling or times of personal refreshment. When they relocate to Panama in January, they will welcome people into their home for days at a time as they help restore and then release them to effective ministry.

Ministry is a lifestyle for this called couple. It’s all they have ever known, and all they ever hope to do.

	In the Beginning

Alva was 5 years old when she was introduced to Jesus Christ by Foursquare Missionaries Darlene and Edgar Coombs in San Cristobal, Venezuela. Darlene discipled Alva and gave her the opportunity to teach Sunday school at the age of 13. Alva would later study pastoral ministries at the Foursquare seminary in Venezuela, earn a certificate in missions and Christian education in Costa Rica, and graduate with a master’s degree in biblical counseling from Doxa International University in Coral Gables, Fla.

Serafin also received Christ at the Foursquare church in San Cristobal, at the age of 16. Almost immediately he felt a definite call to the ministry, and both he and Alva recall being filled with the Holy Spirit within one year after deciding to follow Jesus.

“Our lives were challenged for God to be witnesses of Jesus anywhere we could,” Serafin recalls.

The couple became Foursquare ministers and accepted their first pastoral assignment in 1969. They pastored in Venezuela for 21 years, serving congregations in San Cristobal, Tariba and Barquisimeto. In 1989, Serafin and Alva began serving as Foursquare missionaries and, in successive years, ministered in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, El Salvador and Panama.

	Life of Service

They currently serve The Foursquare Church as area missionaries leading the Foursquare presence in Central and South America. In addition, Serafín has represented The Foursquare Church and Foursquare Latin America as a member of the advisory and executive committees of the Pentecostal World Fellowship.

Foursquare Latin America has grown significantly under the leadership of Serafin and Alva.

“We have almost 17,000 churches and meeting places, over 38,000 licensed workers, and 1,300 churches planted in the last 12 months,” Jonathan Hall tells Foursquare.org. He says it is a wonderful privilege for him to follow Serafin and Alva, and a great honor to partner with other strong ministry leaders in Latin America.

Jonathan believes leaders in the region are committed to praying for an increased move of the Holy Spirit as the gospel is spread through the Latin nations. He affirms that kingdom expansion will continue in Central and South America through a new generation of leaders who are fully trained and released, and characterized by healthy partnerships and strategic networking.

	New Season of Ministry

After years of fruitful ministry leading the Foursquare work in Latin America, Serafin and Alva say the Lord began to speak to their hearts about a new season of ministry for them. Last January, while in Los Angeles for a time of prayer and refreshing, God spoke to them “with boldness to our hearts,” the couple says. They knew the voice of the Lord was clear, and that the time was right for a change.

FMI Director Jim Scott recalls praying with Serafin and Alva about what the Holy Spirit was saying to them. He says it was like that eternal moment in the book of Acts when the church council in Antioch was asked to set apart Barnabas and Paul for the work to which God had called them.

“The church in Antioch was being asked to send their best into a new season of ministry,” Jim says, “and I was aware that FMI and The Foursquare Church were being offered a similar opportunity.”

The couple’s connection with FMI and Foursquare Latin America remains strong. Although their location may change, they will no doubt find themselves in high demand, speaking and ministering at Foursquare churches and in conferences and events worldwide.

They always remember how they were brought to Jesus Christ and carefully discipled for Christian service while they were still young. Much like Darlene and Edgar Coombs did so many years ago, Serafin and Alva want to help disciple emerging leaders, and already plan to make room for ministry couples in their home in Panama.

Hundreds of people who have received Christ under the ministry of Serafin and Alva have already been discipled and become pastors in churches throughout Latin America. The couple is humbled and grateful by this legacy.

They aren’t the only ones who are grateful. FMI and the national leaders, pastors and congregations of Central and South America are grateful, as well.

“Serafin and Alva are truly apostolic elders,” Jim Scott affirms. “They have provided visionary leadership, able administration, anointed instruction and compassionate pastoral care as a ministering couple in The Foursquare Church for 42 years.”

They will always be loved and honored in their homeland and, indeed, throughout The Foursquare Church.

No Grinch Zone: Christmas at Foursquare Churches

People at West Salem Foursquare Church in West Salem, Ore., may have wondered if the Grinch had paid them a visit a few weeks ago. In the sinister green monster’s spirit of Christmas taking, someone stole the church’s 12-foot cargo trailer, which was packed and ready to deliver much needed supplies to a local family.

West Salem Dream Center Director Craig Oviatt, in a story aired by TV station KGW, told a local reporter that all that was left were the broken padlocks and tire tracks in the gravel where the trailer had spun out of the church’s driveway.

“The trailer, along with an older white box truck, has been an icon in West Salem and the Edgewater District for years,” says John Fehlen, lead pastor of West Salem. “When our community sees it rolling around, it represents hope and dreams coming true; it represents freedom from the fangs of oppression.”

Last year alone, donations of food, furniture and supplies were distributed to 540 families via the church’s trailer. But John says the trailer is simply a tool.

“It’s the passion of those who donate and serve that truly shows a hurting world that God is good,” he tells Foursquare.org.

Enter an anonymous and generous donor who heard the story of the stolen trailer and wanted to replace it with a larger, newer one to help the church help the community. Others who heard about the church’s loss also made donations to help increase the outreach ministry using the new trailer.

One man and his daughter from a Foursquare church in Camas, Wash., drove 90 minutes just to make a generous cash donation and to deliver bags of clothing to the ministry. Another woman in the community stopped by the church and donated cash, a blanket and gifts for needy families.

The love of Christ and the spirit of Christmas giving are alive and well in West Salem, Ore.—and in other Foursquare churches around the country.

Jerry Walton, senior pastor of Faith Temple (Lamesa Foursquare Church) in Lamesa, Texas, says people in his church are encouraged to bring gifts that would have made the baby Jesus more comfortable. He says people plan to donate heaters, pillows and blankets to the cause. Then, they will deliver the gifts to families in their West Texas community this Christmas.

The unemployment rate in Crook County Oregon remains at 19 percent, and that means 1 in 5 people of Eastside Fellowship (Prineville Foursquare Church) in Prineville, Ore., is out of work. But church members won’t let that keep them from giving this Christmas.

Brian Carmack, an assisting minister at Eastside, says people gave gifts to one other on November 13 to kick off what they call “Live to Give.” They were encouraged to give a gift to someone else every day until the end of 2011. That’s 49 days, and gifts, that these faithful folks will give away to whomever they want.

“The gift does not need to cost money,” Brian explains. “We are encouraging creative ways of sharing Christ’s love to the world around us.” It’s an effort, he says, to remind people of the joy of giving and “to realize that we cannot out-give God.”

Gettysburg Foursquare Church in Gettysburg, Penn. will be taking part in the “Advent Conspiracy,” based on the book by Rick McKinley. Senior Pastor Mark Chester says the people in the church raised $31,000 last December to help fund a food ministry in their community that reaches 80 families each month.

“The idea is to spend way less, and maybe nothing, on Christmas and to give the money away to someone else,” Mark says.

Pastors and congregants from Neighborhood Bible Church (Bakersfield Northwest Foursquare Church) in Bakersfield, Calif., will be available every night through Christmas Eve to give folks from their community a most interesting gift.

Anyone who drops by their church will be given a clear glass Christmas tree ornament and a small slip of paper. They will be encouraged to write a prayer request on the paper and stuff it inside the ornament. Then, the ornament will adorn the church’s tree through Christmas.

This gift goes beyond a simple ornament, however.

Each night, one of the church’s pastors will spend time praying with any individuals or groups that come to see the beautiful tree. Senior Pastor Thomas Gnacke remembers that, last year, several ornaments containing prayer requests for new jobs were hung on the tree. He is delighted to report that many of those people have since become employed.

Pastor Tom hopes this year that 1,000 people from his community will take part and help them decorate the church’s Christmas tree—and allow the church to pray for them in the process.

And so it looks like the Grinch is nowhere near Foursquare churches this year. Individual churches may celebrate Christmas in different ways, but one thing is clear: Jesus Christ is alive and giving through His people again this Christmas.

New Foursquare Church Locator Connects People to Pastors

Foursquare pastors and local church leaders should expect to see visitors arriving at their churches soon with a new welcome pack downloaded from Foursquare.org. It’s part of an upgraded church locator on Foursquare.org that helps connect visitors to local Foursquare churches and pastors.

Here’s how it works: Visitors to Foursquare.org search the online church locator and find a Foursquare church they would like to visit. They download and print the welcome pack, and bring it with them when they visit. The printout provides everything they will need to locate the church and connect with the senior pastor, including a map to the church, the church’s address, phone number and email address, and the pastor’s name. The welcome pack also includes a place for visitors to provide their contact information so the pastor has a record of the visit.

“This is a win-win feature of Foursquare.org that helps potential guests connect with our churches,” says Foursquare Vice President and General Supervisor Tammy Dunahoo. “People need a quick and accurate way to find our pastors and churches, and this is a practical way to help make that happen.”

Every Foursquare church in the U.S. is automatically set up to benefit from the church locator and welcome pack. Details about each church are automatically pulled from The Foursquare EZRA database. Each church can update and maintain the accuracy of its data in EZRA so that current information displays when a visitor finds a church through Foursquare.org.

When a pastor receives a welcome pack from a visitor, he or she can scan the QR code (like a bar code) with a smart phone or use the provided unique link. This step helps document how many visitors found a Foursquare church using the church locator on Foursquare.org.

The Foursquare church locator also includes tabs for potential visitors to view information about pastor(s) at the church, church details and stats, and local (district) Foursquare news feeds. Reviews of the church from Yelp.com can also be viewed for each church. Church members and visitors are encouraged to share their experiences at local Foursquare churches on Yelp so that future visitors will have even more information about the church.

Accredited Ignite Academy Opens at CrossPointe

Foursquare’s Ignite Academy celebrated two major achievements at a recent event in Christiansburg, Va., that was attended by Foursquare President Glenn Burris Jr.; Ignite Academy President Mike Larkin, Ph.D.; Life Pacific College President Dr. Robert Flores; Vice President of Corporate Affairs/Chief Operating Officer Sterling Brackett; and 200 leaders and Ignite students.

At the same time that a new group of Ignite students are moving into dorms on their new campus at CrossPointe, the program is also celebrating its recent accreditation to operate as an extension campus of Life Pacific College (LPC, also called LIFE Bible College).

“I couldn't be more pleased with the formal move of the Ignite Academy to the campus of CrossPointe,” Glenn affirms. “This immersion discipleship model will have a significant impact on our recruiting, training and releasing of emerging leaders.”

On July 19, 2011, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) voted unanimously to approve of Ignite operating as an extension campus of LPC. This means that the college classes offered at Ignite will be governed by LPC and taught by adjunct faculty who are accredited through LPC.

In addition, the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE), which is the accrediting arm for Christian schools, has approved LPC to offer the Ignite extension campus in Virginia; also, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Accrediting Commission will be initiating a site visit to the Ignite Academy during the upcoming school year.

In the past three years, through an articulation agreement with LPC, Ignite students have been able to receive limited transferable college credits. But the new accreditation ensures transferability of college credits to any college institution.

Mike Larkin affirms the importance of the relationship between the Foursquare denomination and Ignite, which was incorporated as a subsidiary of Foursquare instead of as a separate non-profit organization.

“I recognize the historical value of LPC within our movement,” the president of Ignite Academy notes. “It behooves Ignite to be linked with our heritage. The investment of Foursquare into Ignite has been invaluable, and I am committed to raising up leaders within our denomination.”

Ignite’s new status results in important benefits for students, parents and the school. Mike notes that the first question parents ask when inquiring about Ignite is if the academics are accredited. The young people who come to Ignite are going to be discipled to discover their “life mission,” but parents also want assurance that the extra years of schooling will set their children on the right track if they chose to transfer for further education.

Additionally, in the current economic times, more and more students are having trouble raising funds for continuing education. With accreditation, Ignite will qualify for Title IV government funding, which will help students pay their way. Receiving financial aid will increase enrollment and make more room for students who might not be able to pay on their own.

Academics is part of what Ignite does, but the thrust of the program is its focus on making biblical education practical, and putting “hands on” to theological biblical training. Many young people today don’t want to merely sit in a sterile classroom; they want involvement.

Ignite combines the academic with the practical in one program. For example, students go on missions trips as well as write papers about their ministry experiences.

Ignite consists of four 3-1/2 month semesters. In addition to classes, students spend 15 to 20 hours a week serving the surrounding community, local churches and various outreach ministries. During the fall semester, students travel two different times for seven days on urban mission teams on the East Coast. Following the spring semester, students travel to one of three designated global mission stations for at least 20 days.

“The bottom line.” Mike asserts, “is that we want our students to be knowledgeable about the Word of God, familiar with the voice of the Lord, walk with an uncompromising walk, and serve the Lord with passion and compassion.”

During a recent Foursquare Missions International (FMI)-sponsored relief and compassion trip to Japan, Tokyo Pastor Chu Kosaka was a natural at drawing crowds. As the driver of one of the vans taking teams into some of the hardest hit areas of the Tohoku disaster, he posed at every stop when locals brought out cameras and serenaded them when asked to play a few songs.

His fame as one of Japan’s best-loved rock icons from the 1960s and 1970s set the stage to make a difference for the kingdom of God. Each month Chu—the first Japanese rock star to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine—travels into the heart of the decimated region to conduct prayer and worship gatherings. His presence there is a welcome sight to the people as the world’s spotlight on their plight slowly diminishes.

Many consider Japan one of the least-reached nations with the gospel; of the 128 million people in Japan, less than 1 percent attend a Christian church. Since the earthquake and tsunami, local pastors and Christians from around the world have set their sites on reaching the Japanese people with the love of Jesus Christ and the practical assistance they need to recover.

Among those who regularly reach out is Renee Williams, Foursquare missionary to Hirosaki, Japan. Renee drives 10 hours round-trip to deliver food, clothing and other necessities to strangers, many of whom survived the tsunami with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The Japanese government has made a great effort to restore essential services, but many people have fallen through the cracks. It’s to these people that Renee hopes to minister.

While some Christians may view disaster relief as a diversion from the church’s “proclamation ministry,” FMI Associate Director–U.S. Missions Ted Vail says it is one of the greatest expressions of Christ’s love that is right in line with our mission.

“In this case,” Ted tells Foursquare.org, “the physical proclamation precedes the verbal one.” He points out that not long after World War II, Foursquare missionaries brought supplies to stranded Japanese islanders as a demonstration of the gospel.

“Today we have this opportunity again,” he maintains. “There has been a generous outpouring of resources, personnel and prayer that is making a difference in a very hard place.”

Japan’s Foursquare churches have raised funds—with additional financial help provided by FMI and U.S. Foursquare churches—to secure a house and a vehicle in the Sendai region to help host relief teams, according to David Masui, a church planter and the former national leader of Japan Foursquare.

Foursquare’s area missionary to North Asia (name withheld for security reasons) elaborates: “Our intention is to continue to partner with Japan Foursquare in this endeavor for at least two years. Additional assets will be placed on the ground with the intention of connecting our joint relief and compassion efforts with evangelism, discipleship and church planting.”

Foursquare pastors and leaders in Japan were encouraged during their national convention this summer. Ralph Moore —senior pastor of Windward Oahu Foursquare Church (Hope Chapel Kaneohe Bay) in Hawaii and keynote convention speaker—assured delegates that revival has come to Japan. Foursquare Missionary Steve Niksarian in Sendai says pastors received Ralph’s prophetic word to the nation in spite of the long shadow cast by the Tohoku disaster that took the lives of at least 25,000 people.

More than 1,500 miles of Japanese coastline were affected by the tsunami, and 95 percent of commercial fishing boats were destroyed. Soil liquefaction has caused structural damage in 10 of the country’s 47 prefectures (jurisdictions) as far away as 100 miles inland. Ongoing help is needed to continue to rebuild Japan, Steve Niksarian insists.

“This disaster is something that no nation, let alone a national church, is fully prepared to deal with independently,” he asserts.

Although the task is challenging, Foursquare leaders throughout Japan still join the Psalmist in declaring: “From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety” (Ps. 61:2, NLT).

The most severe drought in decades is threatening the lives of more than 11 million people—especially young children—in East Africa. Famine has been declared in parts of southern Somalia and threatens to spread further if nothing is done to prevent it. Kenya and Ethiopia are also severely affected by the crisis, with millions in critical need of food and water.

Insufficient rains have created drought conditions throughout East Africa, destroying crops and killing livestock. Malnutrition and disease are on the rise as families travel long distances in search of food. Record high food prices, internal conflicts and insecurity in the region further exacerbate the situation. Thousands of refugees are pouring across the border to Kenya and surrounding countries in a desperate effort to survive.

In partnership with Foursquare leaders in Kenya, Foursquare Relief and Compassion is responding by raising awareness and support to provide aid to those who need it most in this area. Ted Vail (project director for Foursquare Relief and Compassion) and Chad Isenhart (assessment coordinator) are working closely with Humberto Paz, Foursquare Missions International’s (FMI) area missionary to Africa and the leaders of the Kenya Foursquare Church to strategically reach those affected by the tragedy in East Africa.

Plans to provide essential food and water are underway at this time through our Kenya Foursquare family. In Somalia, where there currently is no Foursquare presence, Foursquare will be working through partnership organizations to assess needs and respond, as we are able.

Join us as we pray for the millions suffering in East Africa. Please consider supporting our efforts to reach these affected peoples. Your financial gifts will provide food and essentials to those who are in critical need of aid at this time, and enable us to reach people with the tangible love and compassion of Jesus Christ in this most urgent hour.
