Focus:
- Provide spiritual refreshing and stimulus, with an eye toward the future. Post-Easter season is a time of energy attrition for the average church leader, with something of a "wind-down" as summer is approaching. At the same time it is the time the wise pastor will take a brief overview of the coming "church year"--to open to the Holy Spirit’s early-season prompting regarding the congregation’s life and the ministry of the Word that he/she (pastor or teacher) might begin to pursue in study or preliminary outlining of series or books to read or study. Habakkuk’s words offer good counsel as we look ahead (Habakkuk 2:2-3).
- Provide spiritual nurture and enrichment, with an eye toward the growth and health of the pastor’s personal life, marriage and family life. Realism with the corrosive effect of the draining schedule and busy demands on church leaders, coupled with the rawness of today’s culture, its wearying carnality and increasing spiritual darkness, calls for input and resource that will bolster and reinforce leaders--strengthening and arming them in ways that will help each one to, "having done all, to stand ... " (Eph. 6:10-19).
- Provide practical focus on life-principles that beget true New Testament ministry "in the Spirit" Every sensible pastor and church leader longs to find and live in that power-flow of grace that the Holy Spirit brings to ministry--ways and means that always "exceed the limits of ‘my best’ and welcome the operations of 'His best.'" The watershed point for truly lasting and fruitful labor in Jesus’ vineyard is at the junction of (1) the leader’s understanding of spiritually vital principles and how they are applied, and (2) the leaders willingness to receive and pursue them. As Jesus said, "If you know these things, you’ll be blessed if you do them" (John 13:17)
Concept:
The NPLS is the fourth of a series of "summits" initiated by Pastor Jack Hayford, in pursuit of his announced agenda as our president. They seek to:
- Deepen our collective focus as spiritual leaders, thus renewing ourselves in the life of the Spirit to the glory of Jesus, Lord of the Church;
- Dissolve any residue of "distance" between Foursquare leaders due, over our long history, to whatever diminishing of prioritizing our movement’s focus on serving and enfranchising the local church and it pastoral leadership--seeking to dissipate any hierarchalism and institute mutual trust and partnership;
- Declare and refocus our values and identity as a Christ-exalting, Bible-centered, Spirit-filled movement--a fellowship dedicated to maximizing the potential inherent in our historic call and our contemporary variety of gifted and spiritually called leadership--reaching to the World, serving the body of Christ.
The NPLS is also very strategically scheduled to assure that not only is every credentialed Foursquare leader "in the loop" of the values drawing us into our future, but 1) to provide a solid, personally refreshing and insightful resource for every participant, making it an enriching and worthwhile investment of each one’s time and trust, and 2) to do this at the usual time our national convention--thus affording strengthening fellowship and input, especially for those unable to attend the July 22-25, 2007 gathering in Jerusalem.
