Urban Multicultural Ministries

The United States is reported to be not only the number one sender of missionaries, but also the number one receiver of missionaries as well. It also has been reported that the third largest non-Christian population lives in the United States. The fact that the largest Christian church in the world is in Korea and the largest Buddhist temple is in the United States also causes us to ask certain questions about our strategies to reach our cities.

Over 60% of the population in the United States lives in cities. It has been reported that 43% of the people in Los Angeles are working poor. People in this category are employed, in some cases working two jobs, but are still not able to meet their monthly living expenses. This taken in conjunction with the rising costs of living in the city makes it very difficult for churches to handle the costs of doing ministry from member contributions alone; this is not an isolated incidence. The development of a U.S./Urban Support strategy would serve to address this dynamic.

One of the bedrock precepts of our movement has been to bring the gospel to the lost wherever they are; across the ocean as well as across our country. In responding to the tremendous population shifts that are occurring the United States we must continue to focus on touching our cities and finding breakthrough ways to support ministry in those areas.

Purpose
The Department of Urban and Multicultural Ministries exists to assist The Foursquare Church in becoming a more passionate and sensitized movement that is equipped to reach out and serve leaders in urban, multicultural and multiethnic settings. We also seek to intentionally serve and advance the ministry of those seeking to reach the city in a way that will contribute to their effectiveness in penetrating and overcoming the brokenness and neglect, abandonment and injustice of the urban environment. As Micah 6:8 tells us, "...but what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"
