State of Foursquare Missions International
By: Glenn Burris Jr., president of The Foursquare Church
The distinctiveness of our Foursquare Missions International (FMI) program, along with its expansion around the world, has been cause for celebration. We are, however, in a season of tremendous global change. National and regional leaders have become respected peers and global partners; their leadership is helping frame new strategies as we together seek to fulfill the mandate of the Great Commission.
The U.S. church has a continuing partnership in global missions, and FMI is strengthening both clarity and connection with local churches. Never in our history have local churches been more involved and connected around the world—which creates a situation that is both exciting and complicated.
Many pastors, ministers and lay leaders have personally embraced the call to take the gospel everywhere, including to people groups within the U.S. This led to a redirection of some finances as churches poured their resources into newfound places of ministry.
Consequently, FMI has experienced a shortage of funding as it attempts to keep up with strategic priorities and previous commitments to missionaries around the world. We are seeking the right balance between the strategic role of the local church in world missions and our national role in deploying, training, caring for and covering our missionaries.
Both church-funded and Global Missions-funded missionaries are needed if we are to reach the world. FMI Director Jim Scott is working diligently with pastors, supervisors and missionaries to bring clarity and continuity. We’re getting there, one conversation at a time.
