Joel Augé returns with Invisible Things, the artist’s new release on the Integrity label. Filled with soulful pop tinged with indie-quirkiness, the album features 11 finely crafted songs. This is the sound of a heart in love with Jesus, pouring out its offering to produce compelling art.
Augé’s vocal range is impressive, and the album really highlights his strong falsetto in places. For that reason alone, I suspect it will be hard to translate this collection into a congregational setting. Equally, the melodies are clever and harmonically complex at times, adding to this feeling that the majority of the work would function very well in times of devotion or contemplation, if not in worship-gathering settings. Notable exceptions are the upbeat, exalting opener, “Be Lifted,” and the bluesy piano number, “Show Your Love.”
Overall, Invisible Things is a dynamic release, marked by maturity in both songwriting and instrumentation. The musical brushstrokes display a broad palette, one that many will find appealing, while the lyrical content that conveys both majesty and intimacy will connect with many different communities of faith.
In addition to the tracks noted above, other standout tunes include “Save Me,” “Invisible Things” and “Here to Love.”
